Identität und Alterität im Roman „Europolis” von Jean Bart

Journal Title: Diversité et identité culturelle en Europe (DICE) - Year 2019, Vol 2, Issue 16

Abstract

The present paper discusses the issues of identity and alterity (or otherness) in the novel Europolis, published in 1933 by the Romanian author Jean Bart, which represents a social fresco of Sulina, a Danube port city with about 5000 inhabitants of many nationalities at the time. The starting point is the question of how identity is generated within the narrative progression of the novel. Images of identity/alterity that emerge in the course of the plot are being examined, focusing on the mechanisms of dependence of one’s identity on others and the key motifs of differentiation between the self and the other.
