IDIOMS IN TEACHING TURKISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: COMPARISON OF TWO DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES

Journal Title: International Journal of Langauges' Education and Teaching - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

Text idioms are set phrases that are made of words that usually have different meanings from what they usually have and they are syntax forms that are made up by stereotyped words. While teaching idioms, there may occur some communicational problems resulting from nations’ cultural characteristics unless the cultural dimensions of the target language are considered. Idioms should be taught to the learners of Turkish as a foreign language in conformity with the situations that they represent in order to avoid negative communicational issues. This study is made considering not only communicational aspects but also cultural factors of language teaching. The teaching process is carried out via two groups of learners. In one group, the idioms are taught through audio-visual materials, in the other one the same idioms are taught through written texts. In this study, the two different techniques are compared and their affects to the learning are stated. In order to specify the target idioms, the B1-B2 levels of three different course books that are used for teaching Turkish as a foreign language are studied. The idioms used in this study are gathered from those sources. The readiness of learners is detected by giving a pre-test that consists of the target idioms. While determining the content and the period of the teaching process, the data gained through this pre-test is also considered. At the end of planned teaching period, pre-test and post-test results are interpreted using statistical techniques.
