Images of Justice in Mythology

Abstract

According to one opinion justice refers to the ultimate purpose of law. Concept of justice is defined by so many thinkers but they have not reached a generally recognized definition even in our day. On the other justice, has always been an ideal that the lawyers are trying to reach in wilderness of ordinances. The image of justice emerges from mythology. In this context, the myths have a light-holding qualification as to how the concept of "justice" is perceived by ancient people. Justice gods and goddess like Enki, Utu, Ma'at, Shamash, Themis, Dike and Justitia have formed and obtained their images in myths. Imagery has a vast power for explanation of specific concept. In this article, it will be tried to shed light on modern day through antic societies’ concept of justice reflected in their mythological images.
