Impact of Early Childhood Education in Developing Emerging Literacy Skills among Children with Hearing Impairment

Abstract
Background: Birth to 8 years of child’s life, the foundation is laid for overall development and learning in later stage. Learning includes critical skills, dispositions for academic learning, relating to others, becoming positive contributors to peer groups, families and communities. These skills will be develop among children through active participation with their peer, their families and their communities. This active participation extend from home to preschool, head start, playing groups, libraries, parks and places of workshop.All young children, including those who have disabilities, are dependent upon the experiences and opportunities available within these everyday contexts as they build a solid foundation for development and learning. Among all the disabilities hearing impairment is one of the significant disability, and its incidence very early in a child’s life may paralyse his/ her communication skill development which in turn will lead to plethora of other problems in learning, employability and socialising. In the context of education, children with hearing impairment because of their poor verbal language skills are delayed and deficient in the process of developing literacy skills, which is a fundamental requirement for academic learning. However, research evidences emphasise on the fact that early and appropriate training might help them overcome these deficiencies. Several ways have been proposed for improving emerging literacy skill development in young children with hearing impairment. This reported study tried to investigate the impact of early childhood education in developing emerging literacy skills to children with hearing impairment. Experimental intervention was carried out through 6 months sessions of 45 minutes in the preschool. Results: The results elicited relatively better influence of early childhood education in developing emerging literacy skills in preschool children with hearing impairment.
