Abstract

The purpose of this article is to establish how the choice of names for newborns in the villages of Donetsk region is deterministic by family traditions. To achieve this, it is necessary to solve the following objectives: determine which family traditions have had the greatest impact on the dynamics of the studied name system; clarify the relation of names in honor of close relatives in different periods; identify common trends in the children’s names and local features characteristic of the studied name system. The object of the study is personal names given to children in Ukrainian families of Donetsk region from late XIX till early XXI centuries according to family traditions; the subject of the study is the impact of established traditions on the dynamics of the studied name system. The study proves that family traditions significantly affect the dynamics of the name system from late XIX to early XXI centuries: at the same time, it contributes to the preservation of its stable basis, maintaining the popularity of some of the traditional names for the Ukrainians, and update, periodically returning already forgotten names into use. However, family tradition is not the only factor that has influenced the formation of the name system of Donetsk region. Therefore, in the future we should explore other motives of the choice of names and find out their relation and productivity in different chronological periods.
