SYMBOLIC COMPONENT OF BUSINESS NAMES MOTIVATION: DESIGNATIONS FROM ARTS DOMAIN
Journal Title: Записки з ономастики - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 18
Abstract
The article deals with symbolic motivation of Ukrainian business names. Symbolic motivation is considered as based on all cultural senses that a certain word can potentially convey. The author analyzes business names derived by means of semantic shift or composition from the art domain’s common and proper names. The research revealed that the main donor zones for business names formation are literature and music, while architecture, painting, and cinema play only a minor role. Moreover, several art domain motivators are not confined to a specific art zone and can be attributed to the domain in general. An important feature of business names motivation is its multiple nature: since proper names under consideration are quite often coined by using homonymous and polysemous words, this entails very broad network of semantic associations that can be triggered in a specific context. Another important finding of the research is linguistic evidence of business sphere’s global character as Ukrainian business names are quite often based not on Ukrainian national symbols but on international ones.
