Influence of Genetic factor on Dental Caries
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 3
Abstract
Caries remains the most prevalent non-contagious infectious disease in humans. Dental caries is a multi factorial infectious disease, with many contributory environmental factors, there is also strong evidence for a genetic component in the etiology of this disease. Genetics is defined as that branch of biology which deals with laws or principles of heredity and variation. Oral health is an integral component of general health and both share a dynamic relation. Studies of twins, families, and animal models have all indicated that caries has a genetic component. Evidence of a genetic contribution to caries is based on four questions examining inheritance that altered the dental hard tissues; the immune response; sugar metabolism & consumption; salivary flow, salivary constituents; & salivary defense systems. Improved knowledge of genetic and application of newer genetic techniques, helps to understand genetic risk factor relationships between dental caries and individual’s phenotypic expression and above all, to prevent genetic diseases.
