Study on prevalence of co-morbidities associated with diabetes mellitus

Abstract
Diabetes is the most common disorder. Antidiabetics and related drugs are most extensively used drugs in Diabetic patients. Comorbidities associated with Diabetes are common with uncontrolled Diabetes. The present study was conducted to find out what are the major comorbidities encountered by the diabetic patients and prescription habits of physicians. A total 250 cases were reviewed to evaluate the Diabetes and related comorbidities and their prevalence. The study was carried out over a 6 months period (November 2015 – March 2016) at the rural and urban hospitals (Nallajerla, Jangareddygudem, Telikicherla, Rajahmundry, Nidadavolu, Bandapuram, and Eluru.)Among the 250 patients were prescribed antidiabetic drugs and drugs for other comorbidities. The most common were Metformin, Glipizide, Atenolol, and Telmisortan. The results were found that majority of the patients were suffering from Hypertension (92%) as major comorbidity seen within one year after occurrence of Diabetes and the time of occurrence of these comorbidities are mostly in the first year (22%) after the attack of diabetes.
