Influence of permanent magnet material on the performance of brushless DC motor

Abstract
Permanent magnet material is one of the most important influencing factors for the performance of brushless DC motor. In this paper, a brushless DC motor for wind-fan applications is taken as an example for the investigation. Its electromagnetic performance, operation efficiency, noise, and material cost are discussed with respect to Nd-Fe-B magnet and ferrite magnet respectively. The results show that Nd-Fe-B brushless DC motor has higher torque performance and operation efficiency. Despite that the price of Nd-Fe-B magnet is much higher than ferrite magnet, Nd-Fe-B magnet is the priority choice for engineering applications. However, when there are very strict demands of noise, ferrite magnet has more advantages.
