Initial treatment procedure in the masticatory system dysfunction

Abstract

Introduction. The multifactorial etiology of dysfunction in the masticatory system often gives rise to diagnostic and therapeutic problems. In case of clinical symptoms of temporomandibular disorders it is strongly recommended to apply conservative and reversible methods because of spontaneous subsidence of complaints and the effect of psycho-emotional, systemic, environmental and behavioural factors. Aim of the study. To evaluate the initial treatment in patients with signs and symptoms of the masticatory organ dysfunction. Material and methods. The study comprised a group of 81 persons, who suffering for sings and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. The clinical and radiological (pantomogram) examinations of the masticatory system were performed. Following the initial diagnosis different treatment procedures were applied, depending on the kind of signs and symptoms: pain relieve, muscles relaxants and joint structures unloading. On control visits, after a week, two weeks and two months the effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated.Results. The results of the initial treatment of the patients with temporomandibular disorders revealed a significant effectiveness (82%) of applied conservative methods.
