Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education: A Case of KTU

Abstract
Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is a good way to develop both: language and content skills. Language, meaning and content are integrated, and by extending language, meaning and content resources extend accordingly. The paper aims at discussing the importance of integrating content and language in higher education (ICLHE) and also analysing how it practically helps to develop both: the better language performance and the more efficient acquisition of content related knowledge. The theoretical assumptions developed in the paper for linking content with language are based on the works of Mohan and Bloom, as well as the final products developed as a result of the Socrates/ Lingua 2 project „Language In Content Instruction – LICI“. The empirical part of the paper involves the case study of the group of KTU students who have been working according to ICLHE model for the whole semester. Research methods – participant observation and self-evaluation survey. Research findings indicate that using ICLHE model not only the content is acquired, but the language skills are also highly improved (including listening, speaking, reading and writing). This fact allows to recommend ICLHE model to be wider implemented on the tertiary level, which would increase the motivation of the students for such type of studies and develop their integrated skills.
