Substitutes of Passive Voice in German and Their Equivalents in Lithuanian

Journal Title: Kalbu studijos / Studies about Languages - Year 2009, Vol 14, Issue 0

Abstract

This paper presents the contrastive analysis of substitutes for passive voice in German scientific text and their translation into Lithuanian. Substitutes for passive voice, which are active verb forms with passive meaning, are used to replace the passive voice in German. Translation of German substitutes for passive into Lithuanian might encounter some difficulties, since there are no substitutes for passive voice in Lithuanian. The research aim of this article is to analyze substitutes for passive voice in German and their equivalents in Lithuanian, as well as to highlight the problems and possibilities for translation. The empirical analysis based on samples from the scientific text by N. Thom and A. Ritz (2000) “Public Management. Innovative Konzepte zur Führung im öffentlichen Sektor” and its translation into Lithuanian “Viešoji vadyba. Inovaciniai viešojo sektoriaus valdymo metmenys”. The research objectives of this paper are as follows: the definition and classification of substitutes for passive voice; comparative analysis of different classifications of substitutes for passive voice; morphological analysis of passive voice in German and their equivalents in Lithuanian within the framework of Hall’s and Schreiner’s (2001) classification. The research results reveal translation possibilities of passive substitutes which might help to develop translation techniques.
