Journal Title: Journal of Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore - Year 2017, Vol 11, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: International collaboration between medical institutes provides a valuable solution to the increasing demand of knowledgeable and skilled medical workforce. CPSP-HSE program offers residents of CPSP as opportunity to work in the Irish healthcare system for a period of two years. This study was conducted to assess the feedback of residents enrolled in the CPSP-HSE program in sessions 2015-2017. Subjects and Methods: A mixed method study was conducted to include the residents enrolled in the CPSP-HSE program during the last three sessions i.e. from 2015 to 2017. Questionnaires comprising of open-ended and close-ended questions were sent through e-mails. The data from the filled questionnaires were entered in SPSS version 21 and analyzed. For qualitative data thematic analysis was done and main themes were identified. Results: A total of 88 residents were sent questionnaires through emails. Response was received from 31 cases showing a response rate of 35.2%. Among the respondents, 24 were male (77.4%) and 7 were female (22.6%). The mean age was 30.5 years. The statements were quantitatively scored on a scale of 1 to 5 (strongly disagree to strongly agree). The first statement regarding whether the program has polished the procedural skills, a mean sore of 3.4 + 1.5 was obtained. In the second statement regarding the role of CPSP-HSE program in enhancing evidence based decision making, a mean score of 4.3 + 0.8 was obtained. In third statement regarding development of professionalism a mean score of 4.5 + 0.7 was achieved. The most common strengths of the program were better exposure, development of professionalism, improvement in clinical skills, research opportunities and career development. The common problems faced by the residents were delay in FCPS part-II exam and less exposure to clinical procedures in some specialties. Conclusion: International collaboration programs for post-graduate medical residents can result in enhanced clinical and professional development of residents. The results from this survey highlight the benefits on this program. It is recommendedthat the collaborating institutes try to identify the shortcomings and provide solutions to achieve the desired outcome of CPSP-HSE program.
