INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION ORDER AND WESTERN DOMINANCE
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 42
Abstract
The West, having colonized most of the world through its military forces since the 16th century, also split the world by founding news agencies in the first half of the 19th century. Today, the colonial countries have become mostly independent; however colonialism has not come to an end. It still continues in a different form. In fact, the domination of the West over the increasingly globalized world with rapidly evolving communication technologies is expanding and becoming stronger. Even in those countries with a deep and rooted history, the domination of the West is spread, though they have not been exposed to direct colonialism. The difference is that this domination does not have to be realized by a military invasion; it could be political economic, and commercial. The very basic tool for such a domination that the West continues to maintain over all non-Western societies today is the international communication order that it has established. Western powers have been reshaping the world, which they have changed into an electronic village by means of communication technologies, especially in the cultural sense. Thus, non-Western world is exposed to cultural imperialism, which is the most dangerous kind of imperialism, and alienated to indigenous cultural codes to question such imperialism. This way non -Western world has been changed into a consumer society by the media’s imposing in the Western control. The aim of the study is to investigate the close relationship between the Western domination in political, economic, commercial, and especially cultural areas and the “international communication order” by focusing on the functioning of the international communication order and its impact on the non-Western societies.
