INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HUMOR, STRESS AND PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT ON THE BASIS OF THE RESEARCH IN A GROUP OF TEACHERS
Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Wyższej Szkoły Humanitas w Sosnowcu. Pedagogika - Year 2016, Vol 13, Issue
Abstract
A sense of humor is not a new issue in psychology, but recently it has been a subject of more advanced scientific research. The research is aimed at providing a reply to the following question: Can sense of humor have an influence on the level of professional burnout? The general research problems have been followed by thorough hypotheses. The main hypothesis involving the impact of sense of humor on the level of professional burnout was supported by own results. It has been stated that people who take advantage of the sense of humor in order to achieve social purposes use humor as a defense mechanism and are able to appreciate a sense of humor of other people. In addition, they rarely experience the syndrome of professional burnout. The results indicate that people who have a sense of humor and make fun of their job more often examine the difficult situations as a category of threats. A sense of humor enables to evaluate the difficult situations and deal with them in the way different from “a serious approach,” difficult to put into practice. The mentioned research results should dispel the myth that at work the serious behavior is to be a rule. The results of research show that a sense of humor may lower the level of stress connected with work. The issues of a sense of humor are to be included in the burnout prevention programs. A sense of humor can be particularly important in special education schools as well as troubled-youth establishments. The level of teachers’ burnout is very high and the opportunities for laughing are probably less common than in traditional schools.
