INTONATION DIFFERENTIATION OF POSITIVE EVALUATIVE SPEECH ACTS (ON THE SAMPLES FROM ENGLISH CINEMATIC DISCOURSE)

Abstract
The article analyses semantic and pragmatic peculiarities of approval, praise, compliment and flattery positive evaluative speech acts. The main purpose of the paper is to report on the carried out auditory analysis of positive evaluative phrases intonation parameters. The subjects of this study are approval, praise, compliment and flattery phrases intonation characteristics. The main method of investigating the data has been the method of unbroken prosodic discourse analysis. The investigation has been helpful to define a number of similar tendencies in the choice of the final tone, head, tone movement direction, pitch, voice range and speech tempo in positive evaluative phrases, as well as to identify certain differences in their intonation framing, which allow to dwell on the acoustic image of approval, praise, compliment and flattery speech acts. As for the finding, it has been established that in positive evaluative phrases falling nuclear tone and falling tone movement in the pre-nuclear parts are mainly used. Nearly half of the positive evaluative phrases are characterized by high pitch and wide voice range. The achieved results have practical value, since they can be discussed within the courses of Discourse Analysis and Theoretical Phonetics.
