INTONATION PECULIARITIES OF THE ENGLISH POLITICAL SPEECH

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 23

Abstract

The given investigation is dedicated to the analysis of intonational characteristics of political oratory speech. As shown in the investigations of foreign and native linguists in the sphere of political speech and its prosodic peculiarities, the task of a politician is to carry the main idea to convince the listener and to conquer the audience. It is achieved to a great extent by means of prosody, which adds certain modal colouring to the texts. The intonational structure of political speech is governed by its main communicative function — the impact function. The aim of public speech and the situation within which the action is conducted, define its structure and the choice of prosodic impact means. The conducted investigation allows concluding that public speech of British politicians possesses a strict rhythmic organization, high number of falling terminal tones, high frequency of pragmatic pauses conditioned by the great degree of speech control and also variation of speech tempo.
