Investigation of Daily Life Problems and Strategies of Hearing-Impaired Individuals and Their Families

Abstract

Throughout the world, examining the concept of "disability" from a medical point of view as a physical disease has been replaced by a social perspective that examines the relationships that the individual will establish with other people in society due to his disadvantaged physical characteristics. Therefore, the visibility of the emerging sociology of disability in the field of social sciences has increased in Turkey in recent years. In this study, the problems faced by hearing-impaired people and their families in their daily lives and the strategies they have developed against these problems have been examined from the sociological point of view of disability. The main reason for choosing the hearing disability among the types of disability is the desire to evaluate the problems that the hearing-impaired individual may encounter in daily life through their hearing, speaking, understanding and expression skills, both by the hearing-impaired individual and by the family members of the hearing-impaired individual. Accordingly, the field part of the study was carried out using a phenomenological pattern using a qualitative research method. In-depth interviews were conducted with hearing-impaired individuals and hearing-impaired families, and data were analyzed using the MAXQDA program in Kayseri. In addition to systemic issues such as education and health as a result of research communication, stamp, social and psychological problems such as exclusion and strategies for coping with these problems as communication alternatives, belonging, individual coping, support, import/support strategies such as have been revealed
