INVESTIGATION OF SOME CHOSEN STEELS USED FOR SOIL WORKING ELEMENTS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 236, Issue 2

Abstract

The intensity of wear of three kinds of steel was studied in field conditions. Two kinds of boric steel meant for working parts of agricultural utensils operating in soil and soft steel (S 235) were used for comparison. The investigation was conducted during ploughing in silty soil. The plates of steel were fixed in specially prepared measuring stands mounted to the plough body, and they were moved along the bottom of the furrows made by the plough. Two values of pressure put on the soil from these plates were applied – 6.8 and 12.2 kPa. Linear as well as mass unitary intensity of wearing of the tested kinds of steel were stated and presented in a power formula. Additionally, the profiles of the shapes of the surface of steel samples resulting from soil contact are investigated. The intensities of wear of both chosen kinds of boric steel were similar; it was about 0.00085 g·cm-2·km-1 and 0.00108 mm·km-1 at the pressure 6.8 kPa and 0.00143 g·cm-2·km-1 and 0.00181 mm·km-1 at the pressure 12.2 kPa. It was about two times smaller than the intensity of wear of soft steel. Approximately a 1.8 times increase of nominal pressure of steel samples on the soil resulted in an increase in wear intensity of 1.6 – 1.8 times. The roughness of surface of steel samples after contact with the soil was not very considerable (Ra = 1.00 –1.21 μm). The profile of the surface of the steel samples are characterised by relatively small peaks (Rpk = 0.74-1.52 μm) in relation to falls (Rvk = 2.22–4.00 μm). On the surface of steel samples there were scratches with a maximum depth of about 25 μm. They were probably the result of the influence from particles of gravel or stones. Power index closed to one in models of wearing the examined kinds of steel point out on process of wearing dominated by abrasive forms of destroying the material.
