IRONY AND LAUGHTER

Abstract

Externally, the irony is distinguished by statements seriousness, but in fact it is always a mockery: good or bad, soft or hard, humorous or sarcastic. The irony does not focus on the object of the narrative or image, but on the subject, which evaluates the specified object. In this sense, the irony is always subjective. The term «objective irony» in literature, art, and philosophy implies an inevitable course of events, because of what there is an impression of fair and even fatal course of the process. It is often called «the irony of fate». «Objective» irony often ends with death or suffering of participants in the events, which is why it is called a tragic irony. Meanwhile, a base of the tragic irony, like any other irony, is always a laugh - a mockery. Character of a mockery is defined by the author who has unfolded a story to the reader, and by the interpreter, reader. The definitions of irony, where there is no shade of humor, should be regarded as unsatisfactory. The irony has unavoidable content of laughter. The many shades of objective, tragic, romantic, philosophical, epic irony are paired with countless shades of laughter from sarcastic laughter to a sympathetic smile. Therefore, any determination of diverse forms of irony should include an indication of laughter component.
