Isolation and purification of antibacterial protein from Euphatorium odoratum: A seasonal folk medicinal plant

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12

Abstract

A potent protein with molecular weight of 15.85 kDa exhibited significant antibacterial activity was isolated and purified from leaf extract of Euphatorium odoratum. It is a seasonal girijan folk medicinal plant, of Coastal Ghats of North Eastern Andhra Pradesh area, available from September to March in a year. This plant is being used for different skin diseases by the tribal’s and general public since a long time. Organic (95% ethanol, methanol, chloroform, hexane and a mixture of Methanol: Chloroform: Water–12:5:3 ratio), aqueous and macerated extracts of this plant were found to show different levels of antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium glutamicum, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteusvulgaris, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus thermophilus andVibrio parahaemolyticus with the diameters of growth inhibition ranging from 8–40 mm. Macerated and aqueous leaf extract of E.odoratum showed significant activities than shade dried leaves extracts. MIC values supports that the zone of inhibition of macerated leaves and cold water extracts (25+ 2 o C) of E.odoratum is higher than that of even standard antibiotics. The above reports are very interesting and support the use of Euphatorium odoratum in traditional medicine.
