Comparative In vitro screening of a-Amylase and a-Glucosidase enzyme Inhibitory studies in leaves of Annona species

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 12

Abstract

Diabetes is a syndrome of disordered metabolism resulting in abnormally high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). The one possibility of lowering postprandial glucose levels is by the inhibition of a-amylase and a-glucosidase enzyme activity. The present study deals with the scientific evaluation of a-Amylase and aGlucosidase enzyme inhibitory potential of different successive extracts of leaves of three A n n o n a species (Annona squamosa-AS, Annona reticulata-AR and, Annona mur i cata-AM). The powdered raw material of three plant leaves was extracted successively with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol using a soxhlet apparatus and the spent material was then extracted with aqueous methanol followed by water. All the three plants of methanol, and aqueous methanol extracts showed significant reduction in a-amylase and a-glucosidase enzyme activity. But AS and AM plays a vital role in inhibiting a-amylase and a-glucosidase enzyme activity when compared to AR, thereby reducing the blood glucose level and benefiting diabetic patients.
