«…IT’S NOT A DIFFERENT WORLD, BUT DIFFERENT BORDERS, AND THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT» (phenomenology of the epistolary travelogue of Yurii Shevelov)

Abstract

This article raises topic of Yu. Shevelov’s displacements as the factor of his intellectual personality and a resource of new contexts of Ukrainian humanitarian thinking. The subject of study is the phenomenon of re-experiencing visited places. This re-experiencing absorbs the intention of the lost homeland and realizes as a mental image of a certain country or any other local space. The purpose of the article is to outline the place’s re-experiences as the basis of an epistolary travelogue and at the same time as an impulse for an extended act of perception of new cultural objects and spheres in nationally engaged essays. Because of limits on article’s size, we are talking about separate fragments of the «Swedish», «French», and «Italian» segments of travelogue. The methodology is determined by the subject of study and the research material. This subject and material consist of letters with expressive literary intention. Priority topped retrospective methods. Hermeneutic method meets the dual specificity of epistolary materials that are both documentary (reflecting the circumstances and facts of reality, the study documents that need to take into account the initial temporal and communicative environment) and literary, those that show identity, oriented on the self. Literary texts always exist there «only to return to itself» (H.-G. Gadamer). Phenomenological approach allows discovering the existential importance of subjective feelings, attitudes, and evaluations. The scientific novelty of this article lies in the fact that this is the first suggestion of scientific comprehension of the letters of Yurii Shevelov that are published in the book Yurii Shevelov’s letters to Oleksa Izarskyi. Also, the author of article marks the issue of Yu. Shevelov’s travels as a factor of his existence and intellectual freedom for the first time in Ukrainian literary criticism. As a result of the study we came to the conclusion, that Yu. Shevelov’s existential discourse can be defined as homo viator (G. Marsel), i.e. a traveler who is constantly on the road, mainly to find himself. His travel epistolary sketches of the visited countries and cities usually have ironic, self-ironic, dramatic character, but never purely descriptive. We consider Yu. Shevelov’s place’s re-experiencing as a complex phenomenon, where person discovers his connection to the world. In our case, this connection reflects the intention of the lost homeland, and each trip involves meeting with the inaccessible homeland in the aspectual forms of the mental images of the visited countries. Observations and experiences during travel create a personal impulse for the deployment of researching plots of essays, which reveal unique genetic and typological echoes of the Ukrainian world with Swedish, French, Italian, German, American one. The research has a broad perspective on the issues of studying and applying the migration experience of intellectual in modern life.
