Abstract
This article attempts to give a present-day estimation of Ivan Franko as an outstanding historian and statesman who was a consequential adherent of national unity and fully understood the need of building the independent and unified Ukrainian State, which was the only institution that could prevent the Ukrainians from assimilation as well as enable them to develop the science and culture of the European standard freely.
