Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 54
Abstract
Among all natural disasters such as storms, floods, droughts, landslides that have caused material and moral loss throughout human history, earthquaks come first. Examination of the earthquakes will ensure that measures are taken to minimize the damage of possible earthquakes. Turkey is on the Alpine-Mediterranean-Himalaya belt, the world’s second largest earthquake region. 92% of the Turkey’s land is at risk of earthquakes. Because İzmir locates on active faults, she has been the scene of countless devastating earthquakes throughout history. When historical sources are considered, especially after the 19th century, there is an increase in information about the damage caused by these earthquakes and the precautions taken. These sources mostly come from press organs and archival materials. In addition, because İzmir is an important commercial city, the world press also provided information about regional earthquakes. This study examines earthquakes that caused serios damage in İzmir during the 19th century.
