JAPAN AND SOFTPOWER

Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

After reviewing the main moments from the history of Japan, the author emphasizes the dominant spirit of the Japanese. Being a very homogenous race, they are obsessed with cleanliness (influence from Shinto), they are punctually and accustomed to working collectively. Timidity is considered a virtue. The Japanese are reticent in learning foreign languages. They have a specific perception on beauty mononoaware (empathy for objects), sabi (trace of time or natural aging), wabi (total poverty and isolation). Softpower is a concept invented by Joseph Nye, professor at Harvard University. Softpower is the capacity of a state to influence the behavior of other states by cultural and ideological means, at its disposal. There are three elements that make up the softpower concept: the culture, the values and the foreign policy. These 3 elements are difficult to control by another state or government. Another component of softpower is brand image. There are fully analyzed the 6 components of NBI (Nation Brand Index): 1: export; 2. rule; 3. culture and traditions; 4. people; 5. tourism; 6. investment and immigration. Japan has, in essence, a lot of good things. Japan must be more active in promoting its honest and pacifist foreign policy. It is necessary to improve its communication mode so that the entire world should better acknowledge these values.
