Abstract
Two legislative acts – the Maritime Code and Law on Civil Status Records – grant to the captain of a Polish sea vessel the power to document any births and deaths that occur on board of such vessel and subsequently to submit the records made by him to the relevant Superintendent Registrar or consul. A significant part of this article is devoted to the substantive and procedural aspects of the acts performed by the captain. Moreover, this article contains references to situations observed in practice by the author, a maritime lawyer, and also his de lege ferenda conclusions.
