Abstract

The Greek Cypriots, who considered the transfer of Cyprus to the British administration as an opportunity to realize their dreams of Enosis, started to strive for Enosis by taking advantage of the partisan attitude and tolerance of the British. During the British administration, the Turkish Cypriots were the side that was in a difficult situation economically, politically, and culturally, and the Greek Cypriots came to a superior position thanks to the partisan attitude of England. Despite all kinds of negativities, Turkish Cypriots have struggled to protect their rights and existence. The issue developed within the framework of the Turkish Cypriots' struggle for existence against the Enosis ambitions of the Greeks. The events that took place on 27-28 January 1958 in the struggle for the existence of the Turkish Cypriots constitute a critical turning point that caused a change in their attitudes towards the British colonial administration. What triggered these events was the misinterpretation of “Britain accepted the partition” in the news of Foreign Minister Zorlu’s statements in the Bozkurt newspaper published in Cyprus. British Colonial administration applied extreme violence against the Turkish people who took to the streets with the pleasing effect of the news. Some lost their lives and were injured in the incidents. The sad events in Cyprus have also mobilized Turkish public opinion. The games played by the Greek Cypriots-Greek duo and the massacres they committed in order to achieve their goals are transferred to our people, especially young people, and it is necessary to take lessons so that the same pains do not happen again. This study, by examining the written sources and newspaper reports of those days, is aimed to shed light on a period of the Cyprus issue and to examine the 27-28 January Events, which have an important place in the history of the Turkish Cypriots
