Journal Title: JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION AND PULMONOLOGY - Year 2017, Vol 8, Issue 24
Abstract
Introduction. The prevalence of asthma is high in schools with a frequent occurrence of crises during sports activities. Physical education and sports (PES) teachers are often the first witnesses of these crises. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of PES teachers on this disease. Method. It was a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire conducted from March to April 2017 among 126 PES teachers practicing in Lome. Results. The participation rate was 86%. Ninety-one percent of teachers knew that exercise was a trigger for the asthma attack. However, 12% of teachers were aware of the top 3 triggers and the 3 major symptoms of the asthma attack. Wheezing was a sign of the best-known asthma attack (83.3%). In the event of an asthma attack during sports activity, 13% knew the correct attitude to adopt. Apart from the crisis, 16.6% of them would advise on asthma to always have the bronchodilators on them and to inhale before the sports activity. They were 52.7% to outlaw the sport to any child with asthma. No socio-demographic and occupational factors identified in the study significantly influenced the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices on teachers' asthma. Conclusion. The basic knowledge, attitudes and practices to adopt in asthma in physical education and sports are insufficient in the PES teachers practicing in Lome. The initial and ongoing training of these PES teachers on asthma needs to be strengthened.
