Abstract

Breast cancer is an important medical and social problem among women worldwide. The most common type of cancer affecting women in Poland is cancer of the breast nipple. It mainly occurs in women aged over 50. The results of the latest clinical studies confirm that breast cancer in its early stage can be completely curable. Therefore, women’s health education in the area of early detection of the disease and development of habitual breast self-examination is very important. The goal of this project was to determine the level of knowledge concerning breast cancer prevention among perimenopausal women. The survey was conducted in 2012 among 100 women aged 48–60, living in Chełm and its vicinity. Based on the results of the study it was found that according to 90% of the respondents, family predisposition is the factor responsible for the development of breast cancer. In the opinions of 100% of the women in the survey early screening increases the chances for recovery. As the most important forms of cancer prevention the respondents considered mammograms (92%) and breast self-examination (82%). The women examined obtained their knowledge concerning breast cancer prevention primarily from the media. The majority of respondents showed an average level of knowledge of breast cancer prevention. The greatest differences in respondents’ replies were observed according to education level.Key wordsbreast cancer prevention, women, medical knowledge
