Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 8

Abstract

given the association of periodontal disease with systemic diseases, it seems dentists are required to be aware of periodontal diseases. The present study was aimed to investigate the knowledge of general practitioners and specialists in Kermanshah about periodontal diseases during 2014-2015 in order to provide a comprehensive report of their knowledge and to present it for practical purposes. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, a standardized questionnaire, approved by the expert teachers, was used to measure the knowledge of physicians. The general practitioners and specialists were selected through simple random sampling. Having referred to their offices, they were asked to complete the questionnaire. The obtained data were fed into SPSS-18 software and analysed by descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney).The findings showed that the mean scores of general practitioners and specialists’ knowledge of periodontal diseases were above average. Also, there was a significant correlation between work experience, age, education (general practitioners and specialists) (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was reported between gender and knowledge of periodontal diseases (p>0.05).The results of the current study indicated that general practitioners had a lower knowledge than specialists about periodontal diseases; hence it is necessary to take special measures to enhance their knowledge. Moreover, it is necessary to run retraining programs for less experienced general practitioners, as a target community, in order to improve their knowledge of periodontal diseases.
