Knowledge of secondary school adolescents concerning hormonal contraceptives. Part I

Abstract

Introduction and objective of the study: During the period of adolescence, many young people begin their sex life, often not having any knowledge about contraception. The objective of the study was assessment in a group of secondary-school adolescents of the level of knowledge concerning hormonal contraception methods. Materials and the methods: The study was conducted in the Centre for Lifelong Education in Kijany in the Lublin Region, with the use of a self designed questionnaire. A total of many as 160 questionnaire forms were addressed to randomly selected secondary-school adolescents. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis.Results: The adolescents examined possessed knowledge that before beginning hormone contraceptive therapy, the girl should report to a gynaecologist for advice. Secondary-school adolescents considered pregnancy as the main contraindication against use of hormonal contraception. The results of the studies showed that secondary-school adolescents require education in the area of complications which may occur while using hormonal contraception.Conclusions: The results of the study confirmed that secondary-school adolescents had knowledge concerning the need for consultations with a gynaecologist before starting hormonal contraception. Adolescents require education in the area of contraindications against administering hormone medications, as well as complications which may occur while applying this method of birth control.Key words: hormonal contraception methods, knowledge, adolescents
