Kolejowe przejścia graniczne w Finlandi

Abstract

Finland, one from Nordic countries, because of the geographical – long distances, strong and long winters, has well-developed the rail network and the rail transport plays a great role in the state economy. Raw materials like wood or metals are transported by rail from neighboring Russia. Some rail border points are built among Finland and Russia (only one is electrified) and only one among Finland and Sweden is present. Finnish railways use a 1 524 mm rail gauge (Finland was a part of the Russian Empire until 1917). Finland plays a role of the transit state in the containers transport from China to the USA and Canada. Despite the difficult climatic conditions, VR are well organized and efficient company. Finland has its own rolling stock manufacturer – the Transtech company, which cooperates with global producers like Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens and locomotives and motor units – vehicles equipped in their own propulsion, are manufactured in cooperation. Passenger and freight cars due to VR specific technical requirements are produced domestically.
