Komunikacja kolejowa na polsko-niemieckim pograniczu
Journal Title: Technika Transportu Szynowego - Year 2017, Vol 276, Issue 3
Abstract
Communication on the Polish-German border could be the example of significant progress which has been made in both countries over the last 25 years. Problems emerging in the early 1990s, including the underinvestment of railway infrastructure on both sides of the border, smuggling, lack of adequate rolling stock was gradually resolved. Poland’s membership in the EU since 2004, as well as in the Schengen zone since the end of 2007, and regular meetings of the Polish-German parliamentary group caused that the Polish-German border area, despite its complicated history, has become rather a hope than a trouble. Noteworthy was the impressive growth of trade between Poland and Germany, as well as great infrastructure investments, which were launched in the eastern lands after the reunification of the two German states in October 1990. A similar investment boom in the neglected infrastructure also began in Poland after a membership in the EU and availability of EU funds which have been used for modernization of railway and road infrastructure. At the same time, modern vehicles provided by companies such as Siemens, Bombardier, Alstom and Stadler on the Polish-German border area have been exploited, and later also on the majority of the PKP railway network. Also the Polish manufacturer – Pesa has delivered the railway vehicles produced in Poland for the German operator for the first time in history.
