KÜLTEPE’DEN “TANRININ KADEHİNİ İÇME” ÖRNEĞİ
Journal Title: Archivum Anatolicum-Anadolu Arsivleri - Year 2017, Vol 11, Issue 2
Abstract
What is meant by the phrase "to drink a god" in Hittite texts has long since been discussed by scholars. Some of them think that “to drink the cup of a god” and “to drink a god” have the same meaning. The clause “He will drink the cup of their god” in a Kültepe text (KT VII-a 294/t) which reflects how an Anatolian takes an oath is elaborated here. Old Assyrian sources and studies about “to drink a god” in Hittitology are reviewed in an attempt to understand the phrase in detail. It has been seen that practice of oath taking by pouring a cup out occurs in both periods as well as “drinking a god” and compared these two different form of oath.
