Kyiv Metropolitan Chorus (19th – early 20th century): the sociocultural image of community

Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

This article attempts to make a socio-cultural analysis of community of Kyiv church choir members on the example of Kyiv metropolitan chorus (19th – early 20th century). This period clearly demonstrates the phenomenon of religious alienation in Russian society, and as a result - the processes of penetration of artistic traditions in secular music in church choral performance. Choirs are under the less influence of the place of their location. In view of these trends the regularities of the formation of the choir and its financing, the system of relations between the chorus and his regent, behaviors and life strategies of singers of Kyiv Metropolitan Choir are opened in this article. The article called the names of Kyiv singers and personalities of regents, introduces into scientific circulation the documents that previously have not been used by art critics as a source of social studies of Kyiv church choirs. Unfortunately, the limited documentary base does not permit to reconstruct the whole series of historical figures that were connected with this community of the church choirs singer. The historiography of this issue is rather limited and concerns the Culture and Art side of the issue. This article is intended to make up for the historical and social aspect of the problem.
