LA LIBERTAD COMO TELOS ÉTICO-NORMATIVO DE LA PAIDEIA UNAMUNIANA

Abstract
In this study, we intend to determine the ethical and normative ideal of Unamuno’s παιδεια. For the Salamancan Rector, freedom should constitute the beginning and end of all education efforts, either the parents’, the church’s or the state itself. To substantiate such ideal, Unamuno thought necessary, at first, to defend the freedom of education, which, in his mind, assumed two distinct positions considering the before and after the Spanish Constitution of 1931, concerning his defence of the General Staff of Teaching and the Teaching Organiser State. Having fulfilled such requirement, of political nature, Unamuno understood that education for freedom, marked by an ethical and normative matrix, ought to be structured based on the absolute affirmation of free inquiry, legal awareness and culture, in view of the fact that solely through freedom so conceived could professional, intellectual and spiritual self-determination of the younger generations be assured.
