La revuelta de las comunidades de Castilla en la encomienda santiaguista de Caravaca

Journal Title: Alquipir - Year 2022, Vol 17, Issue 1

Abstract

This article shows the development of “La Guerra de las Comunidades” in Caravaca. It reflects the violence of the movement led by Martin de Robles. From the second half of the 13th century, the Spanish Medieval Military Orders of Temple and Santiago owned the commandery (“encomienda”), headed by a commander. This area of the Kingdom of Murcia was involved in the power struggles between the different dominant groups in the kingdom, headed by the adelantado Pedro Fajardo Chacón, 1st Marquis of Los Vélez. He tried to place his collaborators in the main posts in the towns of the kingdom, slso in the commandery of Santiago, as the Fajardo family had been in charge of its administration since the 15th century. His constant meddling in the political life of the towns belonging to the encomienda ended up triggering conflicts with the local oligarchy, something that finally came to an end in 1520 with the outbreak of the “La Guerra de las Comunidades” of Castile.
