Laboratory evaluation of fungi susceptibility, isolated in denture stomatitis, to selected, natural antifungal preparations
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 5
Abstract
Introduction. Candida-associated denture stomatitis constitutes very important health problem, because fungal infections are related to patients who use prosthetic restorations. Increasing resistance of fungi as well as toxicity of antifungals and high costs of treatment, have an influence on many difficulties in denture stomatitis treatment. Due to large number of failures in treatment of Candida-associated denture stomatitis and also their recurrent character, it is crucial to search the new, effective antimycotic preparations.Aim of the study. The aim of this work was estimation of in vitro susceptibility of yeast-like fungal strains, obtained from direct mucosa swabs taken from oral cavities of patients using prosthetic restorations, to the chosen natural preparations having antifungal effect: Citrosept (Cintamanii), Citrotravel (Cintamanii). Materials and methods. The researches covered a group of 93 patients with the clinical symptoms of denture stomatitis. Mycological tests were performed with the method of direct swab taken from oral mucosa. In the next part of the research cultured strains were identified. Evaluation of susceptibility of all isolates to: Citrotravel, Citrosept, tea tree oil was performed according to the serial dilution method of preparations on solid medium RPMI 1640 plus MOPS with the addition of 2 % of glucose and 1.5 % of Bacto agar. Control systems were used.Results. On the basis of performed laboratory mycological tests, the growth of 99 species of yeast-like fungi was diagnosed at 84.95% among 93 patients, from who oral mucosa swabs samples were collected. The most commonly cultured species were C.albicans, C.tropicalis and C.glabrata. Citrosept and Citrotravel have showed high activity in relation to cultured strains, especially to C.albicans and C.glabrata species. Conclusions. Control mycological tests should be provided in patients using prosthetic restorations. Citrosept and Citrotravel have showed high activity in relation to the most cultured strains. The usage of natural extracts could be consider in denture stomatitis treatment.
