Language Representation of Masculine Characters in Ivan Franko's Prose

Abstract

The article deals with the language strategies and tactics of male characters in the prose written by Ivan Franko. It is shown that masculine discourse of Franko's novels is represented by male characters which lingual code includes both the psychological characteristics of sex and social gender conditionality. There are analyzed strategies and tactics of masculine communication and revealed features of masculine psycho type in the article. It is defined that verbal tactics of male characters in their relationships with women correlated in Franko's prose with such roles: tyrant, father, friend and protector. Also, it was found out that because of social stratification, that divides men on executives and subordinates were forming specific types of masculine narrative – discourses of domination, humiliation and resistance. The results obtained, proved that Ivan Franko gives every man not only lingual characteristic, but also a comprehensive language portrait that reveals his social identity, psychological features and moral traits. The author tries to reflect the themes of conversations that characterize a character according to his mental and ethnic identity too. The conclusions are made that Franko applies language characteristic of masculine characters to show different male types, giving it a dominant value and transforming it into a language portrait. Therefore, the analysis of masculine images based on language portrait is a new field of interpretation and creation of their typological paradigm.
