“Lantern Ceiling”: A Problematic Naming
Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Ceiling forms of the so-called as “lantern ceiling” and “swallow dome” are described more or less different. Maybe these terms, which are explicated in various languages and expressions, are named by researchers rather than obtained from historical sources. No matter how it is named and described by different researchers in various languages, lantern ceiling can be understood as four titles in terms of structure and functionality. The first title is the formation of the “overlay” technique, in other words; the form obtained by placing the materials (mostly wood, as well as stone) on top of each other. Another character is to take light from the top of the ceiling. In this context, such as these ceiling structures have a top window square-formed in the center of the ceiling. Another thing is the diagonal ceiling form that beams would be placed diagonally to the corners on the upper rim, where is the corner of the ceiling. The last feature is contribution of decorative aspects for interiors.
