Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. Osteoporosis-related changes in bone mineral density (BMD) affect the bones of the masticatory organ and result in unfavourable conditions of prosthetic foundation. Women with osteoporosis and pronounced resorption of the residual ridges suffer from denture stomatopathy and the masticatory system dysfunctions that may influence their quality of life.Aim of the study. To evaluate the problems, which occur during and after prosthetic treatment, involving supplementary laser therapy.Materials and methods. The effects of biostimulation laserotherapy as an adjunct to prosthetic treatment were assessed in a group of 15 women (aged 50–80 years) with osteoporosis and some problems concerning deflected (resorbed) prosthetic foundation and denture stomatitis symptoms. Each patients received 10 laser applications. All patients were examined clinically, they also completed a questionnaire before treatment, in the course of laserotherapy and afterwards.Results. The study revealed positive healing effects of laser biostimulation in prosthetic foundation pathologies. The applied treatment resulted in the reduction of pain symptoms, mouth soreness, and denture stomatitis.Conclusions. Laserotherapy improved functional effectiveness of dentures and condition of the masticatory system in patients with osteoporosis.
