LATIN BORROWINGS AS PART OF THE POLISH LINGUISTIC TERMINOLOGY OF THE MIDDLE POLISH PERIOD
Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 20
Abstract
The article deals with the features of latinisms as part of the Polish linguistic terminology (16th – 80’s of the 19th century). Special lexemes of Latin origin in phonetics and morphology were chosen as the material for the research. The method of induction, descriptive, comparative methods were used in the research. The gradual replacement of Latin, which served as a literary and vulgar language, began in the 16th century due to internal and external language factors. However, Latin remains the language of science: the first Polish books of grammar were written in it, the influence of ancient linguistic traditions are seen in presentation, terminology and in explaining grammar phenomena. A significant number of lexical borrowings from Latin, semantic and structural calques are observed. The main reasons for the emergence of Latin borrowings were the lack of specific national terminology and clearly formed linguistic concepts, sometimes automatic transference of a Latin term, efforts to facilitate the understanding of the terms using latinisms. Polish absorbed the Latin linguistic terminology, and then gradually began to select the terms that reflected the concepts and phenomena peculiar to this language. Thus, the formation of the Polish linguistic tradition occurs by adapting the lexemes and by forming specific lexemes on their base. Alongside the existing Polish terms the Latin ones are used as part of modern linguistic terminology having the status of international words.
