Abstract
The article studies the peculiarities of the lexical semantic field of “praise” on the material of modern German and Ukrainian discourse. It provides a detailed analysis of the lexical units denoting “praise” and explicating its meaning in the Ukrainian and German languages. On the basis of the findings of the carried out analysis on the factual data, the nucleus, co-nuclear and peripheral areas of the lexical semantic field of “praise” have been defined. The semantic types of “praise” according to the degree of expressiveness of their realization have been outlined as well as the comparative analysis of the quantitative use of all the defined semantic types of “praise” in the German and Ukrainian languages has been carried out. The carried out quantitative analysis of the defined semantic types of “praise” in the German and Ukrainian corpora draws our attention once more to the specificity of the Ukrainian character, i.e. brings to light its emotionality and sensitivity. “Praise” in the Ukrainian linguistic culture is characterized by a higher degree of emotional coloring than that demonstrated by German speakers, which is proved by a higher frequency rate of expressive praise (69,2%) and praise-laudations (4,1 %) detected in Ukrainian in contrast to the German language.This might be accounted for by a higher degree of emotionality expressed by Ukrainian speakers, which is confirmed by a higher frequency rate of occurrence of all the lexical stylistic devices singled out in terms of the carried out analysis in the Ukrainian language.
