Ler, Indexar, Representar: O Poder que Subjaz à Ordem das Escolhas
Journal Title: BIBLOS: Revista do Instituto de Ciencias Humanas & da Informacao - Year 2013, Vol 27, Issue 1
Abstract
This paper is aimed at analyzing the process of indexing representing information, thus reflecting about indexing as an act of reading, an arbitrary ordering of the “universeâ€, assuming that any classifying system reflects deliberately or not an ordering system. Also, representation is seen as choice on which underlies the power of exclusion and the weight of absence. Thus, this study points out the hidden meaning of words, the semantics and the polysemous to which language is historically and culturally subject, as well as reflects on the responsibility, commitment and the role of the librarian as a mediator and guardian of the library as the repository of knowledge and memory. As the responsible for representing, disseminating and transmitting culture and knowledge, and as a witness tradition ruptures, resilience and/or accession of new techniques and technologies, the library is imposed as a place of dialogue with the past, a place of creation and innovation. Therefore the concepts of reading and reader are also discussed herein, pointing to the socio-historical circumstances determining their formation and the influence exerted on them by all proposed organization and representation of knowledge.
