Linguistic competence and tolerance in the context of intercultural dialogue

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify different aspects of culture, the forms of its existence in contemporary world. One of the main aims of the paper is to analyze the correlation of the concepts «linguistic competence» and investigate the role of these definitions in order to improve dialogue of cultures. At the same time article is shedding the light on impact of «tolerance» for development of intercultural relations as well as «linguistic competence» as a tool of increasing tension and stressful situations in the frame of intercultural communication. The paper reviews the issues of cultural diversity and possibilities of human beings to communicate on the base of mutual tolerant and respectful attitude. Besides, the paper examines culture as the important component and soft power influencing the development of international relations. Taking into account the importance of cultural differences in the development of the linguistic competence, it is considerable to motivate the development of this competence and speakers’ ability to treat with «others» in cultural diversified environment. Scholars (Hymes; Coulthard) emphasized that if we wish to communicate with others, firstly we must recognize the social setting, the relationship with other people, and the types of language that can be used for a particular occasion. We must also be able to interpret written or spoken speech within the total context in which they are used. The tolerance of cultural diversity refers to what kinds of approaches to differences are appropriate. If we wish to improve tolerance to cultural diversity we have to take into consideration that culture is not inborn and the more understanding we have for cultural variety between different countries, the more easily we tend to perceive tolerant attitude toward them.
