Liver Hydatid: Current Management Strategies

Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

Abstract: Human hydatid disease or cystic echinococcosis (CE) is caused by the larval form of cestode. Echinococcus granulosus remains to be a common problem in health care environments in countries with poor resources like, the South America and the East. The liver is the most frequently involved organ in humans. Ultrasonography is the initial diagnostic tool but computed tomography (CT) and serology aids in accuracy for diagnosis of Liver hydatid cysts. The surgical technique for liver hydatid cyst cannot be standardized, and the technique should be tailored according to the size, extent of the cyst and any associated complications of hydatid disease. Although surgery is the gold standard modality for entire spectrum of the disease, medical treatment and percutaneous procedures have evolved as alternative treatment options in the last three decades. Various laparoscopic techniques have also been used safely for management of this entity. In this paper, we review the current management procedures of liver hydatid disease with particular emphasis on the evidence base and setting specific problems.
