Local infiltration of Platelet Rich Plasma a new modality for treating lateral epicondylitis
Journal Title: Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 0
Abstract
Background: In routine practice tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is commonly encountered enthesopathy, which hampers the activity of daily life and it not only effects sports personnel but in our society major chunk of patients affected by it are house wife’s and manual workers, so an effective low cost treatment modality is need of the hour. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) hastens the healing of angiofibroblastic degeneration in lateral epicondylitis by providing humoural modulators and array of different growth factors favours its use to treat enthesopathies. Objective: A short term longitudinal study (Pilot study) was conducted with an aim to evaluate the efficacy of platelet rich plasma in Lateral epicondylitis and its future implications. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients of tennis elbow were selected as per our inclusion criteria and were subjected to single local infiltration of PRP around lateral epicondyle and evaluated using VAS and Verhaar et al Scoring system and followed for 3 months post Infiltration. Results: All pain and functional variables including VAS, Verhaar et.al scoring system improved significantly at 12 weeks after single local infiltration of PRP with p value of < 0.05.. Conclusion: Platelet Rich Plasma infiltration is safe and effective modality for treatment in lateral epicondylitis. However, further studies are suggested to get definite conclusions.
