LOCAL MAPPING IN UKRAINIAN AND POLISH POSTMODERN PROSE

Abstract

Subject matter: the specificity of local territory representation in Ukrainian and Polish literature on the basis of neo-mimesis, taking into account the contextuality of toposes and toponyms as interpretational text markers. Purpose: to trace the correlation between local territories and their simulative equivalents in postmodern fiction; to identify the role of historical-cultural situation as an interpretational context of toposes. Methodology: Comparative analysis with elements of deconstruction and semiotics. Originality: the specificity of the artistic mapping of local territories as identificational constructions of the subjects of narration in Ukrainian and Polish prose was revealed. Application results: Comparative study of postmodern texts. Conclusions: local territories representation in Ukrainian and Polish postmodern texts is connected with the narrator’s/character’s identificational processes relative to the place of their birth/living. The locality of the territory confronts the globalized world as a unified one, stressing the system of differences which encourages narrator’s, character’s and recipient’s self-identificational processes. Under conditions of constantly changing demarcation borders of the globalized society, local territories mythologization proceeds to the creation of the new collective memory, which is free from centering ideology on the basis of characters’ subjective experiencing of them (territories). Subjective conviction adds distinguishing characteristics to territories and acquires characteristics of the cultural being. «Experiencing» encourages transformation of territory to the «own one» as to the one that represents common communicative space with the Another and that is filled with conventional symbols – toposes and toponyms. The tendency of creating the image of the local territory as an effect of reality, i. e. phenomenon which has no physical embodiment, but which is experienced as a reality, is underscored.
