Management as a Multi-Paradigm Science

Abstract

This paper describes the concept of the meta-theory in the field of management sciences. The need to elaborate the meta-theory is caused by contradictions existing in the area of management science and related to different aspects of the investigation processes. The best known is the contradiction relating to the concept of managerial functions (Fayol) and managerial roles (Mintzberg), which indicates, i.a. the utilization of different research paradigms. Mintzberg described the Fayol’s concept as a myth of management sciences. Subsequent researches have shown that he was no entirely right because the science of management should be treated as a multi-paradigm one. Hence the search for the meta-theory which would reconcile these conflicting approaches. In this study, several earlier concepts of the meta-theory have been presented. On the basis of analysis of issues related to research paradigms and meta-theorizing in the field of social sciences and also management science it has been proposed the concept of meta-theory, which is based on the following investigation areas of sociology: an individual, group, organization and institution. These approaches are assigned to the appropriate systems of research paradigms. Thus already research approaches have been identified as multi-paradigm ones. Hence the management science should be treated as a complex multi-paradigm science.
